I blame the Coronavirus shutdown of 2020. The obsessive cleaning and watching of (far too much) YouTube, led to decluttering. After a few weeks, there was a pile of bags gathering, needing to be dropped off at Goodwill. Alas, Goodwill was not open (and as of May 31st, still isn't in our area).
I started small, listed a couple of crafting type items on Ebay, and they all sold. Unfortunately, it was also around this time that I was hospitalized with Covid19 myself and the rest of the bags sat a while longer with all momentum lost.
While recovering and unable to even go to the grocery store, thanks to a Quarantine order, I watched more YouTube. About thrifting. And selling on Poshmark. And buying "rescues" from ThredUp. And a LOT of unboxing videos. (why are they so addictive?)
With my daughter home from college, and, thanks to the Quarantine order that also covered her, unable to get a job, we decided to start listing items in earnest. She would focus on DePop, I would go the route of Poshmark and EBay. And I decided to make the venture completely transparent, so you, dear reader, can see if any money can truly be made this way.
I am ashamed to say, I had a number of items in my closet that had never been worn. Some still had tags on. But for the purposes of this experiment, if it was going to head to Goodwill anyway, I am considering my cost of goods to be $0.
Some items, particularly those that were owned by my now adult son, were a little worse for wear. Some with paint stains, some with small holes. These I am going to attempt to use the "good" fabric from to alter and upcycle. If any of my upcycling experiments are particularly successful I will post "how to" videos on YouTube.
Each week I will summarize takings, costs and hours spent.
Oh, and the Six More Generations thing? I watch a programme called the Great British Sewing Bee and during their recycle week one of the judges informed us that right now there is enough clothing on the planet to clothe the next six generations.
